Make Nine 2018
I decided to do the Make Nine Challenge for 2018.
I'm a little late to the game - unless you count the Wheel of the Year kicking off on the Vernal Equinox - then I'm right on schedule.
I don't like most sewing challenges... but the Make Nine is kind of an un-challenge & I was getting a little stack of patterns I wanted to make to build a capsule collection of Mori base dresses and layering pieces... so I thought it would be a fun thing to help frame my sewing. I'm also trying to use only what is in my stash or thrifted. I really want to use up what's currently in my collection to get to wear some of the special fabrics I have been treasuring and also use up some things so I can make space to collect more intentionally in the future when I do decide to buy new fabric again. Thrifting is my compromise & so far, it's working out well.
So... without further adieu - here is the list!
#1 Tina Givens Madeline Slip
I have made a wearable muslin version of this already, from a thrifted ivory colored 100% cotton sheet. I had some fitting issues with the bodice and not enough of the ivory cotton to recut it, so the bodice that fits is actually left over white sheet fabric. I made it to go under a refashioned lace dress I made & it works perfectly. I also wear it with other short dresses and I really like it.
The muslin is definitely a slip, not stand-alone outerwear... but it makes a great underskirt & I definitely want to make it again... probably a few times.
I also want to make the "crop" top. (The name cracks me up because it's anything but cropped. This is probably the only crop top I will be making for myself at any point in the forseeable future!)
#2 Dottie Angel Frock - Simplicity 1080
This pattern has a cult following! I bought it not too long after it came out because I loved the style & it looked fun to make, but it wasn't what I was actually wearing at the time, so I never made it till now. This weekend I made a wearable muslin.
Reading reviews, people either hate or love this pattern... I personally found it really fun to make and I didn't have any big fitting issues like many people have described. I've already cut another one that is kind of View C, except I had to adjust the place where it met to accommodate my small piece of vintage calico.
A lot of people reviewing this pattern complain about that line going straight across - it's obvious to me as a thrifted-fabric aficionado, that the designer came up with this look to be able to use to cuts of fabric to the fullest... so it doesn't bother me. The pockets are also super-fun to make and amazingly functional. I stuck all kinds of things in them as I was wearing this yesterday for the first time around the house and garden. I am already envisioning an army of these dresses and tunics for summer. I could totally live in them!
#3 Tina Givens Annabelle Ruffle Slip
This one looks like another fantastic underdress that could be a stand alone summer dress in the right fabric. I got a twin sheet set of dusty pale pink Egyptian cotton sheets at Goodwill last weekend that I am going to use for the wearable muslin. Tina Givens patterns are hard to use stash fabric for because them require a lot of yardage and usually 54" width at least... eventually, I'd like to buy some linen for this make - but for now, sheets do the trick!
#4 Butterick 6601 (from 2001)
I think the shorter length with a scoop neck would make a nice base dress. The longer one in a gauzy rayon might be just the thing for a hot summer day too. I'd like to make it in some fabric I don't really care about first because it might turn out looking like a hospital gown... but it could be a fun oversized babydoll pattern, with the right fabric choice.
#5 Simplicity 7177 (from 1991)
This is a vintage jumper pattern I got from a thrift store - I like both the dress view and the blousy cuffed version of the jumpsuit. I have an Amy Butler flower print in my stash that might be fun for a jumsuit, if I am feeling brave this summer. I also think a neutral linen with lots of texture would be great for Mori - but I am not going to buy anything new - so I'll have to keep my eyes open an thrift stores!
#6 McCalls 3273 (from 1975)
This is another thrift store find. I love all the lengths of this one and think it could be great for Mori Kei or Dolly Kei. The miniskirt version would be cool to make in a tapestry print and layer over a Madeline slip or an underskirt & blouse. An earthy neutral would also be nice in a longer length.
#7 Vogue 7156 (probably 1980's)
This is one of two vest patterns I was thinking about - I really want a brocade or tapestry vest with a Dolly Kei vibe. I have a yard of navy and copper brocade that would be great for the pointed front view D. I also have a contrasting tapestry remnant for the pockets that could be fun. The other pattern has a curved, buttonless version that I think would look lovely in a velveteen - burgundy or another deep jewel tone... but I don't have anything like that in my stash at the moment - so I'll have to keep my eyes open when thrifting.
#8 McCalls 7913 (from 1995)
I actually saw this pattern on Pinterest and sought it out on ebay because it reminds me of this mustard yellow dress from AliExpress that is always popping up in my Pinterest suggestions and I love it every time i see it. I have some chambray that I might make a muslin from and also some burgundy courduroy for after I work out the fit and construction.
#9 Cynthia Rowley - Simplicity D0752 (2017)
I stumbled on this dress pattern recently online and just had to have it, so I was happy to snag a cheap one on ebay. I have a couple different fabric choice ideas for this one - will probably start with thrifted sheet as a musin to get the fit right and then I have a lovely floral rayon I bought from fancy fabric store in LA that might be great... I also think linen would be nice, if I master the pattern and end up buying some new linen later... for now, sticking to shopping my stash and thrifting.
Okay that's it! Nine patterns... lots of sewing for 2018.
